For the readers among us, there can never be too many books. But when it comes to moving your books into a smaller home with limited space, there may just be a few extras that could be donated for another book lover to enjoy.
Sometimes it's best to begin with the books you love and know you could never part with and set those aside to keep. Then look for the books that you would like to pass on to your children, grandchildren or friends and put them on a pile to go to their homes. Make a third pile for the books you can easily part with and then you're left with a smaller set of books to evaluate closer, also known as the "maybes." These may require a little more time as you consider whether or not you would read them again, reference them or want them taking up valuable space in your new home.
One of the first places to consider donating your books is your local library. Then you could visit them or borrow them to read again without them taking up space in your home. While the library may already have a copy on their shelves, they may utilize your donated copy in the county library system, the bookmobile or for book sale fundraisers that support your library.
Other charities also accept books such as:
Community Aid Thrift Store (31 Rohrerstown Rd, Lancaster, PA), Freedom Thrift (114 Rancks Church Road, New Holland, PA), Matthew 25 (48 E.Main Street, Lititz, PA), Purple Heart (www.purpleheart.org), Reuzit on State (1054 S.State St. Ephrata, PA), Reuzit of New Holland (707 W. Main St. New Holland, PA),
and the Salvation Army.
You can also check with your local school, as they may hold used book sales as fundraisers, or ask your local church if you have religious books to pass on. If you're moving to a retirement community, check to see if their library is accepting books or if they could use them for a fundraiser.
Downsizing your book collection can make room for new reading adventures in your life and pass on the joy of reading to someone else!
